HILLCREST PARK LODGE - 1717 S 13TH ST, MT VERNON, WA
Over the last seven years, more than 13,000 hours of Mount Vernon Trail Builders volunteer work has tripled the trail network at Little Mountain Park. One the most ambitious projects to-date was the Nature Trail. It’s a wide, even path designed so nearly anyone has an opportunity to enjoy the forest and take-in the interpretive signage along the way. At a quarter-mile in you encounter handsome bridge that crosses over a Carpenter Creek Tributary. The project took two years to complete, and needless to say, our volunteers are very proud it.
The next “big” project on MVTB’s to-do list is the “Heart of the Park” (HOP) public trailhead facility. The vision is a whole new main trailhead area near the Park’s main entrance with an ample parking lot, permanent restrooms, an open picnic area, a covered public structure, and a bicycle skills course.
In fact, work on the bicycle skills course is already in the initial stages, with the proposed route for the “flow lines” trail mapped and currently under review. Following the flow line trail will be technical climbing route, ride-able “skinny” structures, and lastly, a pump track. Even better, the bicycle skills portion of the project is fully funded thanks to the generous support we’ve received over the past two years since our first HOP fundraising event. In parallel, the City of Mount Vernon is presently working on site plans for the additional parking, restrooms, and other facilities.
This year, our HOP fundraising goal is to fund the public picnic area. Mayor Jill Boudreau will be presenting the City's preliminary design drawings for the HOP facility, as well as, some brief updates about current and upcoming efforts by both Mount Vernon Trail Builders and the Mount Vernon Parks Foundation. Expect all the great food, refreshments, and live music we had at our last event. We will also be giving away a full-suspension mountain bike valued at $2,200 courtesy of our friends at Skagit Cycle.
It’s all happening Saturday, June 4th at 6:30 PM Hillcrest Park. Hope we see you there!
