MOUNT VERNON TRAIL CORPS

Let’s Celebrate the Solstice Together – Doing Trail Work on Rooty!

The Rooty Trail has had a rough time of it this fall—Big winds and heavy rains have brought down plenty of trees and branches, clogged drains, and eroded trail tread.

The gift of time is one of the most meaningful ways to give back. With that in mind, we hope to see you on Saturday, January 18th, as we work our way up from the old yellow gate, clearing debris, smoothing tread, clearing drains, and rehabbing damage from those pesky "social trails” that keep popping up.

Volunteer Details:

Be sure to bring sturdy shoes, gloves (if you have them), and your holiday spirit. Tools, snacks, and guidance are on us.

Please lend us a hand restoring Rooty, one shovelful at a time—on the shortest day of the year!

If you’ve ever hiked, biked, or ran through the woods of Little Mountain Park, you know that these pristine trails are built to last. MVPF’s Trail Corps prides itself on creating a lasting and sustainable trail system that helps people explore the natural beauty of this mountain while also giving unique trails to explore. And we cannot do it without you.

The Little Mountain trail network consists of over ten miles of trails, built off the backs of over 17,000 volunteer hours. The elaborate trails snake from the peak to floor of Little Mountain, containing many levels of skill. Little Mountain and its trail builders pride on creating a network of varied trails to appeal to the entire local community.

Financial support from donors like you help to cover our annual operating costs so our well-trained volunteer leads can organize and provide a regular schedule of safe and fun work parties and build upon our strong partnership with the City of Mount Vernon Parks Department. In addition to trail work, Mount Vernon Trails Corps also relies on generous donations to help care for and advance the many additions we’ve made to Little Mountain Park, including;

  • Design and installation of way finding signs all along the park’s trail system.

  • Providing printed maps for information kiosks strategically located to help hikers and bikers find their way.

  • Developing a free, GPS-driven map app in partnership with REI, to help you find your way around Little Mountain with your smart phone. You can download the Little Mountain trail map app here

Construction and maintenance of the Little Mountain trail system is an always-evolving process. We organize several volunteer trail days a year where we invite people out to work on the trail system. We are always looking for sponsors for these work parties. If your business would like to donate $500 to help cover insuring, recruiting, and leading our volunteers, as well as other costs of maintaining these trails, please contact us. This park is the community’s, and it takes a community to keep it looking great.

For those that want to get their hands dirty, volunteers are always wanted on our trail building days. All we need if your enthusiasm for helping our parks grow and prosper, and we’ll provide the rest. Stay up to date by following us on Facebook and this website, and be sure to subscribe to our newsletter. You can also sign up for trail building days below.
