Work on Fred's Trail Was a Great Success

On May 22, 13 trailbuilder volunteers turned out at Little Mountain in the morning rain to work on Fred's Trail. As the day progressed they turned an old, eroded, steep, scramble route into a still challenging, safer, more sustainable trail.

A strong and skilled group worked on steep and slippery terrain building crib and fill steps, stone steps and improving the dirt tread.

It's an impressive construction and in places even beautiful as stones were fit into the ground, one with its own fern garden intact.

Bridge Building Session on La-Z-Boy Trail

We had nice weather and a good turnout of 16 volunteers to help us build a new bridge on La-Z-Boy. We've been doing a lot of drainage improvement on La-Z-Boy in our last few sessions. The slot drains seem to be doing a great job of allowing water to pass right through the trail bed.

Here you can see John making sure that our concrete bridge piers are level to one another. Trail bridge building is an exact science. Sort of.

You can see why we needed a bridge over this area.

Jackie worked hard to earn her Mount Vernon Trail Builders t-shirt this session. Any volunteer who accumulates 10+ hours earns a t-shirt.

The bridge planks went on once the holes were dug for the piers and the runners were lined up correctly.

It looks like Spring might finally be here! Come out and join us for our next session on May 28th.

Please Join Us for Another Trail Work Session

While we've concluded our high-line operation, we still have more gravel to move off the road's edge. We will be using the power carrier and wheelbarrows to move this gravel in on the Upper La-Z-Boy trail and Lower Surfer's Way trail. Simultaneously, we'll be working on a new bridge, which will be built mid-trail on La-Z-Boy. A group of high school students will be working independently on trash pick-up. They will focus on the lookouts and along the sides of the park access road to keep Little Mountain Park looking beautiful.
