This fun little family park along the banks of the Skagit River is just north of downtown Mount Vernon and makes for a quick stop away from the hustle of downtown shopping. Whether by road or by walking trail, this little playground and picnic area is an easy escape. It’s a great spot for an afternoon picnic to relax and watch the sunset while the burn up some energy. While there’s plenty of parking, you might consider parking downtown instead and then meandering up the Skagit Riverwalk Trail to stretch your legs. Follow the earthen path north a few hundred yards and you’ll find yourself in the wooded open space of North Lion Park featuring an about one-mile long nature loop frequented by dog walkers, bird watchers, and anglers. And if just the nature area you want, you can find a small parking area at the intersection of Freeway Drive and South Riverbend Road with room enough for 3-4 vehicles.
